I thought that for a change I’d show a few bit’s of my rough work for a recently completed illustration.
This is the www.silverscreensociety.com illustration based on the film Mon Oncle by Jacques Tati. I hadn’t seen the film before starting work, and became a real fan afterwards! The watched the first time with a pen and pad in had, noting down my first impressions, things that jumped out at me. What did stay with me was the scene near the start where M Hulot enters his building (pictured) climbs a maze of stairs and then finally reaches his appartement at the top.
The building looks to be made up of lots of assembled shapes which Is what I wanted to get accross in my final pic, the tumble-down, but fun look of the place. But as time passed I reduced and reduced to a much simpler composition in the final.
So here are my sketches for this illustration, along with a few reference screen shots I took as I watched.
